Beyoncé, Sara Bareilles, RuPaul And Josh Groban: 10 Musicians Who Were Nominated For Emmys This Year

Following
This article is more than 4 years old.

Music is one of the only art forms that touches almost every kind of entertainment, and that is represented in the nominees at award shows every year. There are musical categories at the Oscars, the Tonys, the Emmys, and of course, at the Grammys, and thus those who are talented in crafting songs and performing them beautifully have a shot at winning all four awards.

Yesterday, while the Emmy nominations were rolled out, a number of famous and successful musicians were named as potential winners, though many went under the radar as people talked about which actresses and actors were snubbed or what shows didn’t deserve the love they received.

Here are 10 musicians who were nominated for Emmys yesterday, even though TV isn’t the medium they normally work in.

Beyoncé

Nominated for: Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, Outstanding Music Direction, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special

Of all the musicians who earned Emmy nominations yesterday, Beyoncé is perhaps the most notable. The multi-hyphenate racked up three nods for her Netflix concert special Homecoming, and a fourth could be on the way, as the nominees haven’t yet been decided for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), but since the event was titled Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé, chances are she’ll be one of the lucky few. Queen Bey has now been nominated for six Emmys, but she has yet to collect any.

Alex Lacamoire

Nominated for: Outstanding Music Direction

Already a four-time Grammy winner and a three-time Tony champion, Alex Lacamoire may win an Emmy in just a few months, adding to what must be a very heavy trophy shelf. His work on Fosse/Verdon earned the special one of its many nods of recognition, and he stands a good chance of coming out a winner.

Sara Bareilles & Josh Groban

Nominated for: Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics

The beloved duo hosted the Tony Awards last year (despite the fact that both have been nominated but never won), and for their time on stage, they wrote a hilarious tune called “This One’s For You,” which is now up for Original Music & Lyrics. Bareilles nabs her second Emmy nod and Groan his first.

T Bone Burnett

Nominated for: Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score)

One of the most respected producers in the music industry, T Bone Burnett recently made his way into TV once again, and this time he may take home a piece of gold. The musician has collected over a dozen Grammys (including two Album of the Year wins) and an Oscar, and he may soon add the E in his EGOT for the music he composed for True Detective.

RuPaul

Nominated for: Outstanding Competition Program, Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program

Better known as a drag queen and now a host, RuPaul has recorded and released over 10 albums, landing a handful of hit singles on various Billboard charts, especially on the dance tallies. The superstar has now been nominated for 10 Emmys, and he's already four. He’s up for another three trophies this time around, and there’s a good chance he takes at least one home.

Adam Schlesinger

Nominated for: Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics, Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music

Schlesinger holds the rare distinction of having been nominated for all four EGOT awards, but sadly, he only has one. The songwriter, who has done everything from musicals (Cry-Baby) to pop-punk (he was a founding member of Fountains of Wayne, be known for their hit “Stacy’s Mom”), has nabbed a pair of Emmys out of eight nominations.

Bret McKenzie

Nominated for: Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics

Singer-songwriter and actor Bret McKenzie has quietly racked up plenty of awards, but he has yet to win an Emmy, even though he’s now been nominated for seven. The multi-talented figure has won a Grammy and an Oscar for his songwriting prowess, and now he may claim the E in his eventual EGOT.

Thomas Newman

Nominated for: Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music

One of the most award-nominated composers in the world, Newman earns his third Emmy nomination for creating the title music for the Hulu show Castle Rock. While he may be the most-nominated composer without a win when it comes to the Academy Awards (he’s been up for the gold statue 14 times without ever taking one home), he’s had better luck at the Emmys, landing one win among his three nods.

Maybes

While most of the nominations were revealed yesterday, there are some categories where shows or specials have been selected as potential winners, but the actual names behind the projects have yet to be decided upon. In the coming weeks, some well-known musicians could earn Emmy nominations, including Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney (the two rockers are likely nominees for Outstanding Variety Special, Pre-Recorded) and any number of stars who took part in the recent Tony, Grammy and Oscar Awards, as well as those who performed in the live staging of RENT.
