Global stand-up star Russell Peters has been tapped to receive the top comedy award at the upcoming Banff World Media Festival, which is set to run June 12-16.
The Last Comic Standing judge, who had a cameo in Jon Favreau’s Chef and lent his voice to Disney’s The Jungle Book, will receive the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award on June 14. The Canadian-born comic and actor also will deliver a master class at the industry retreat in the Canadian Rockies.
Peters, who is in the middle of his Almost Famous World Tour, in 2008 started self-financing and producing his own comedy specials and DVDs, including Notorious for Netflix. He currently has over seven hours of content on the streamer.
The comedian, who is repped by WME, also will appear in an upcoming episode of Lip Sync Battle on Spike TV. And Peters and Faizon Love are set to co-star in the stoner buddy comedy Ripped, to be directed by Brad Epstein.
Banff’s 37th edition also will see HBO saluted as the company of distinction, with stars and top network execs led by CEO Richard Plepler in town to deliver keynote addresses and master classes.
