Barcelona have once again shown their total support for Lionel Messi after Spain's Supreme Court upheld the 21 month sentence handed to the Argentine star for tax fraud.

Club spokesman Josep Vives made a brief comment on Wednesday night to explain the club's stance on the decision and revealed president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been in touch with the Messi family.

"The Club reiterates, once again, its full support for Leo Messi, his father Jorge Messi, and his family," Vives said.

"This afternoon, FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu contacted the player’s family to communicate this support. The family was very grateful, not only for today's gesture, but also for the support the player and his family have received from the Club throughout this process.

"The Club will continue to stand with Leo Messi, his father, and his family.”

As for Jorge Messi, his sentence was reduced from 21 months to 15 months due to his cooperation in the case.

Neither Messi nor his father are expected to face prison time, though, given that tax sentences of less than two years are suspended in Spain.
