The Strand Theater in Lakewood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The beautiful, and historic Strand Theater in Lakewood may be turning 94 this year, but the theater doesn’t have any intention of slowing down.

The Strand Theater, which opened its doors in 1922, initially operated as a tryout theater for Broadway shows before they hit the big stage. Since then, the theater, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has seen many famous acts, including Taylor Swift, George Carlin, and Alice Cooper.

Celebrate the theater’s rich history at the Strand’s 94th Anniversary Gala, which will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14. Tickets cost $100.

The Gala will feature delicious dishes from local restaurants, and a special performance by Franke Previte, the Golden Globe winner of “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” and “Hungry Eyes,” which were both written for the film “Dirty Dancing.”

During the evening, there will also be performances by Lisa Sherman, Eddie Testa, and the BIG RoaD All-Star Band. The live entertainment starts at 8 p.m.

The event will honor four loyal supporters of the theater, including Lakewood Committeeman Michael D’Elia, Academy Award Winning Composer Franke Previte, Steve Levine, owner of Windmill Restaurants; and Thomas Jannarone, attorney and owner of Bar Anticipation in Lake Como.

The Strand, which opened its doors in 1922, initially operated as a tryout theater for Broadway shows before they hit the big stage. The theater was designed by Thomas Lamb, an architect of the 20th century, whose notable works include the Capitol Theatre in New York City.
