The rainy weather is not just affecting roads, causing mudslides, flooding basements, or leading to brown well water. It can also affect your garden.

There can be too much of a good thing for plants. Too much rain water can hurt your plants, washing away nutrients they need.

Melanie Strite, co-owner of Evergrowin' Greenhouses, said a tell-tale sign of too much water is discoloration in leaves. The store has had customers come back and buy plants from them again because the season's excessive rain has killed the original plants they bought.

"I would say that it has definitely been a difficult spring," Strite said. "It's been hard to get out into the gardens, because we haven't been able to till and stuff as quickly because of the wet soil. And then also, all of the rain has caused more plants to die than normal."

Strite said to spray fungicide on tomatoes to help control blight. For heavier feeders such as petunias, she suggested adding extra fertilizer.
