BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The historic Bastrop Old Iron Bridge is closed to all pedestrian traffic, officials announced in a release Friday.

Linda Humble, the city manager, cited safety concerns in her decision to close it down.

The bridge’s structural engineer told city officials Thursday that the bridge had significant corrosion since the city’s last in-depth report, which was in January of 2014.

A six-foot fence with signs warning against trespassing have now been placed at both ends of the bridge’s entrances.

“Officials will take proper enforcement action, citation or custodial arrest, in the event we find someone who ignored the warning signs and scaled a six-foot fence,” said Public Safety Director and Police Chief James Altgelt.

Kimley-Horn, the engineering firm hired to restore the bridge, is set to outline plans for how to address the issues. The company also will show what experts found to be wrong with the bridge at the City Council meeting on Nov. 27.
