A 13-year-old girl was brought to Lawrence General Hospital May 20 and pronounced dead shortly afterward.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday after a 13-year-old Amesbury girl was brought to Lawrence General Hospital Monday afternoon and pronounced dead shortly after.

Her death is now under investigation by the Essex District Attorney’s office, Lawrence Police and state police, authorities said.

The girl, who is not being identified because she is underage, was brought to the hospital at 4:47 p.m. Monday.

The district attorney’s office originally stated the young girl was dead when she arrived at the hospital, but on Tuesday, said she was pronounced dead.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is scheduled to perform an autopsy Tuesday, but investigators expect it “will take some time before there is a ruling on the cause and manner of death,” Carrie Kimball, a spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

The investigation is active.
