A judge sentenced a former Garwin city clerk to 28 months in federal prison for stealing money from the Tama County community.

Anna Leytham in January pleaded guilty to federal theft charges, admitting to stealing at least $70,000 from a program receiving public funds.

Prosecutors said Leytham stole the money over the course of more than a decade, from 2001 to 2013.

Police arrested Leytham last June after a state audit revealed $562,000 in improper spending within the city.

The judge also ordered Leytham to pay about $450,000 in restitution to the city and $35,000 to an insurance company.

Leytham is free until the federal Bureau of Prisons picks a facility
