AWR To Donate RF Design Software To Peking University


Joint High-frequency Design and Research Program Being Established at University's New Microelectronics Research Institute

SHANGHAI, CHINA - Oct. 25, 2006 - Applied Wave Research, Inc. (AWR®), El Segundo, CA and Shanghai Research Institute of Microelectronics (SHRIME), Peking University, China, today announced that AWR is donating its entire suite of radio-frequency (RF) design software in a collaborative effort to advance Peking University's high-frequency design curriculum. The donation is the first step in a long-term program that will establish a joint RF design and research laboratory at the university's research institute. The laboratory will spearhead high-frequency research projects in Shanghai and develop unified process design kits (PDKs) and value-added RF intellectual property (IP) for key foundry processes in China.

Shanghai Research Institute of Microelectronics is a newly established institute at the Peking University supported by the Shanghai Pudong government. Located in ZhangJiang High Technology Park, Pudong, Shanghai, the institute is positioned to be a research and development (R/D) center with strong capabilities in IC design and technology development in China. It is also an education center that provides training for students and high-level professionals in the semiconductor industry. The institute works with the local industry to undertake both long-term strategic research and core technology R/D projects. It collaborates with international universities and industries to establish joint labs in selected areas, and includes 12 departments/labs with focuses in the following areas: advanced process technologies, special device technology and application, EDA technology, mixed-signal/RF IC design, IP verification and standardization, system integration design methodologies, IC and MEMS packaging and testing, nano-technology, wide-band semiconductor device and application, and novel display material and devices. SHRIME's development goal is to grow within five years into one of the key R/D centers for microelectronics and related technologies in China and eventually establish a world-class research center in semiconductor technologies. SHRIME was founded by Professor YangYuan Wang, chief scientist of Microelectronics Institute of Peking University, and currently the chairman of the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC).
