Best bad audition ever? Harry Connick Jr. performs hilarious cover of Sia's Chandelier for his fellow American Idol judges

The judges of American Idol have long been used to strange and occasionally laughable auditions.

Those incidents, however, have usually come from overly optimistic competitors and not from judges like Harry Connick, Jr.

But the 47-year-old changed the dynamic completely in a video posted Thursday with an impromptu and hilarious rendition of Sia's Chandelier.

The jazz crooner, going into his second season as a regular judge on American Idol's season 14, seemed to need little prompting before he left the judges' table for the ill-fated audition.

He was quickly overcome with emotions - and glass-shattering notes - as his passion for the high-pitched tune increased.

Despite the song being well out of Harry's range, the singer kept on trying and somehow managed to hit a few eardrum-rupturing notes before collapsing to the floor.

As for the other Idol judges, Keith Urban, 47, and Jennifer Lopez, 45, they gave in to the hilarity of the moment.

Jennifer did try to remain stoic for a few seconds, but Keith collapsed with laughter almost immediately.

'You did it! You hit the note!' Keith exclaimed as Harry finished his odd little performance.

Silliness aside, the judges were in San Francisco at the time of the video to find potentially great new singers for the upcoming season of the long-running competition show that started the careers of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

The auditions, held over the summer, aimed to find a group of 48 hopefuls who then auditioned with a live band at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles.

From that stage, 24 were selected to move on to the semi-finals, a number typically winnowed down to 10 before the live competitions begin.

American Idol will return for the new season on January 7 and 8 with a three-hour premiere set to stretch out over two days.
