SHELBURNE - Firefighters responded to a barn fire in Shelburne Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Shelburne Police Department, the eastbound lane of Harbor Road was closed to make room for fire equipment. Fire crews from Shelburne, Burlington, South Burlington and Charlotte all showed up on the scene.

Shelburne firefighters, with mutual aid from Burlington, South Burlington and Charlotte, responded to a full-involved barn fire off Harbor Road in Shelburne Tuesday afternoon. The blaze engulfed more than half the structure by the time crews arrives and was a total loss.

The Shelburne Fire Department's dispatch confirmed that the barn, located at 2100 Harbor Road, belonged to Thomas Cabot.

According to Deputy Chief John Goodrich with the Shelburne Fire Department, this is the second fire in a year at the location. There was another fire on the property in December 2016, but not the barn itself. This barn is considered a total loss, according to the deputy chief. He said the fire will be investigated for a cause, though nothing seemed suspicious.

Goodrich added that a stock pile of ammunition was inside the barn and posed a threat to firefighters who had laid down more than 3,850 feet of hose.

There were no indications that any animals were inside the barn according to Free Press reporter Ryan Mercer, who was on scene at the fire.

Crews were heard on the police scanner saying they could see flames from Shelburne Road.

The barn is not affiliated with the Shelburne Farms property.

As of 5 p.m., Tuesday, the fire was under control.
