Esa Emil Sammeli Tanninen, 83, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2019 at home with his family by his side in Duluth. He was born in Lahti, Finland to Emil and Elma (Salonen) Tanninen.

Prior to living in Duluth, MN Esa lived in Ferndale, MI for over 50 years. He worked for Ford Motor Co. as a Tool & Die Heat Treat. Esa loved visiting with his family and friends. He was a life-long member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Esa was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother; five brothers and two sisters; and one great grandchild.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Leila Tanninen; his daughters, Nina (Randy) McClellan of Chassell, MI, Nancy (Douglas) Halling of Maple Plain, MN, Karen (Brian) Raisanen of Duluth; his siblings, Hanna Ranta of Finland, Leo (Toini) Tanninen of Sault Ste.Marie, Ontario, Eija (Armas) Martinen of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Hans (Doris) Tanninen of Battle Ground, WA, Martti (Eva) Tanninen of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Sisko (Russell) Kysar of Yacolt, WA, Mark (Diane) Tanninen of Battle Ground, WA, Seija (Jerry) Lemieux of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Pekka (Mari) Tanninen of Windsor, Ontario and Edward (Elaine) Tanninen of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Effie (Marvin) Raisanen of Kingston, MN, Ingeri (Terry) Hodnett of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Lauri and (Anni) Tanninen of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Ruth (Tuomo) Vuohijoki of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a multitude of dear friends.

Visitation 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. Visitation will continue from 10 until the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service on Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, 5755 Ryan Road, Duluth. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Jarvi Dowd Funeral Home
