Residents of Middleport are being advised to guard their belongings after a rash of recent property crimes.

Middleport Police Chief Bruce Swift issued a letter to residents, saying thieves have been extra opportunistic lately – stealing just about anything that’s not secured or locked up.

Neighbors are advised not to leave any bikes, toys, tools, lawn equipment, etc. in plain sight and unsecured. They’re encouraged to keep all garages, outbuildings and sheds locked, especially at night.

Police also say use of outdoor lighting and motions sensors can help deter thieves. They also advise not to leave any items in sight in parked vehicles and to always lock vehicles -- even in your own driveway.

Swift issued the following statement:

"It is sad that these steps must be taken to protect our homes and property that we work hard for every day, but we must understand that society has changed and that there are many people out there that do not have any respect or morals and do not care about you, your property or how hard you have worked for what you have."

Joshua Hall has had three bicycles stolen in the past month.

"They need to stop because it's childish," Hall said.
