Area roundup: New store in Redkey, new police chief in New Castle

REDKEY – Dollar General’s newest store, at 9180 West Ind. 67 in Redkey, is now open, and will celebrate its official grand opening at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, with prizes and special deals.

Additionally, the first 50 adult shoppers at the store will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag with complimentary product samples, among other giveaways, according to a release.

New Castle names a new police chief

NEW CASTLE – Matt Schofield has been appointed to succeed the late Brad Catron as chief of the New Castle Police Department.

Schofield, 48, is a 24-year law enforcement veteran, and had been assistant chief under Catron, who died Dec. 18 after a sudden illness. Schofield had served as acting chief since Catron’s death.

Mayor Greg York announced the appointment this week.

Schofield has selected Justin Wardlow, who had been a New Castle police sergeant, as his assistant chief.

Community Foundation scholarships available

MUNCIE — Scholarship applications are now available for the more than 40 scholarships administered by the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County.

High school seniors and current college students can visit cfmdin.org/apply-for-scholarships to view available scholarships and access the online application.

Scholarships for post-secondary education administered by the Community Foundation have been established by donors, who set the criteria. Scholarships are awarded to students participating in a wide variety of activities, with a wide range of grade-point averages, from schools across Delaware County and beyond, according to a release.

Central Class of '56 plans lunch

MUNCIE — The Muncie Central High School Class of 1956 will have its quarterly luncheon at noon Jan. 10, at Osborn's Family Restaurant, Yorktown All classmates are welcome.
