'End of an era': Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence tweet their sadness after ABC Family show is cancelled after four seasons

Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence posted upbeat messages on social media on Monday after their show Melissa & Joey was cancelled.

The ABC Family show was halted after four seasons with its final episodes set to air this summer, according to an article by E! News.

'We are proud of the milestones Melissa & Joey has achieved, being the network's first sitcom to reach 100 episodes and the network's first comedy to win a People's Choice Award,' said ABC Family executive vice president Karey Burke in a statement.

The series stars 38-year-old Melissa as local politician Mel Burke who hired Joey's character Joe Longo as a nanny.

'Now that the kids are grown and Mel and Joe have married and are looking towards starting a family, it seemed like a natural time to bring the series to a close,' Burke said in her statement.

We are grateful to Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence, and the whole cast and crew who worked so hard on this successful show

Melissa shared the news with her more than 500,000 followers on Twitter.

'The end of an era of my life. This week will be tough! But onwards and upwards!' she tweeted.

Joey, 38, also looked on the bright side in tweets to his more than 175,000 followers. 

'Onwards and upwards!' The 5ft2in blonde will conclude her role as Ohio politician Mel Burke in the fourth and final season, which resumes in August

The show's 100th episode and mid-season finale will air on March 8.

Melissa & Joey premiered in August 2010 to 2.2 million viewers but its ratings have since dropped.

ABC Family picked up the series following the success of the network's 2009 movie My Fake Fiance that starred Melissa and Joey.

Melissa previously starred in the television shows Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch.

Joey's numerous television credits include Gimme A Break!, Blossom and Brotherly Love.
