The students are coming back.

Move-in day for first-year students at the University of Delaware is Saturday.

Delaware State University students began moving in Wednesday, with "Welcome Days" activities continuing throughout the weekend.

Dreaded by some parents and eagerly anticipated by others, move-in weekend will bring more than 4,000 first-year students to Newark.

For Newark residents and incoming parents alike, typical move-in weekend traffic delays will be compounded by ongoing construction on Main Street.

Here's what you need to know.

Move-in times

New students move in Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Returning students move in Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

UD uses a "Drop and Go" process, meaning drivers should pull up, drop off all of their belongings and then drive to long-term parking. Drivers can print a parking pass for their student's dormitory ahead of time here

Housing assignments were emailed to students at the beginning of the month.

Students who pay for early check-in began moving in Thursday at 5 p.m. Students living in the University Courtyard Apartments, under UD's ownership for the first time, move in Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UD will have "Blue Hen Helpers" available to answer questions and offer directions at all first-year dorms Saturday. More information regarding check-in and what to bring is also available on the university's website.

Newark traffic

Main arteries to UD include Del. 896 (South College Avenue), Del. 2 (Elkton Road) and Del. 273 (Main Street). Other nearby roads expected to have heavy traffic include Cleveland Avenue, Delaware Avenue, Academy Street and Park Place.

Drivers should avoid Main Street. The right lane from Washington Street to North Chapel Street and the left lane from North College Avenue to the Trabant Garage are closed due to an ongoing renovation project.

Parking on Main Street has also been limited by construction.

The construction to replace all of Main Street’s surface started in April and will continue until next July, costing $11.8 million.
