Four days after a shooting that left one Gainesville man dead last week, police have yet to determine whether the shooter will face criminal charges.

Roderick Ray McCoy, 24, was shot at Reflections Apartments, located at 205 SW 75th St., on Friday shortly after 2 a.m. and was pronounced dead later at UF Health Shands Hospital, said Sgt. Chris Sims, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Sims said the shooter — whose name has not been released to maintain privacy during the active investigation — is not considered a suspect.

Police said the shooting wasn’t random, and the shooter and McCoy knew one another. During their investigation, ACSO took the shooter and several others into custody to question them, all of whom were cooperative and were later released, Sims said.

Sims said it is unclear if criminal charges will be filed against the shooter. Police will continue investigating the details of the shooting and will send their findings to the state attorney’s office afterward for final review on whether the shooter should face charges.

Friday marks the third fatal shooting since April that ACSO has investigated.

An April shooting left 23-year-old Christin Cassels dead on the scene in a garage behind her boyfriend’s house in Hawthorne. In May, 24-year-old Derrick Devante Smith was shot at Holly Heights apartments and later died at Shands.
