HERSHEY, Pa. — Hampered by foul trouble for the majority of the night, the Chambersburg Trojans fell short against the Trinity Shamrocks 47-38 in the Mid-Penn Conference championship game Friday at Milton Hershey.

Trinity (19-3) came out of the gates aggressively, but the Trojans (19-5) held them off defensively, finishing the first quarter with a 9-6 lead.

Things went awry for Chambersburg in the second quarter when starting center Tyler Collier, who had four points in the opening quarter, picked up his second foul of the game.

Just a few plays later, starting forward Tyrell Williams picked up his second foul, forcing Trojans coach Shawn Shreffler to play his backups for the majority of the quarter.

“You’ve got to make sure that anyone who steps on the floor in any situation is able to execute and do the things we need to do to be successful,” Shreffler said. “Our kids play hard all the time. We might not execute sometimes, but it’s certainly not for lack of effort.”

The Trojans’ bench held its own, sending Chambersburg into halftime trailing by just four points, 18-14.

With Collier and Williams back in to start the third, Chambersburg regained the lead, and the two teams traded baskets, with the Trojans heading into the fourth quarter with a slim 32-30 advantage.

Early in the final quarter, Collier picked up his fourth foul, sending him back to the bench. The Shamrocks immediately capitalized on his absence, driving into the lane for a three-point play.

Shreffler inserted Collier back into the game and the big man immediately grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul, but fouled out on the very next play with 2:17 left in the game.

From that point on, the Shamrocks began adding to their 39-33 lead, eventually sealing the game with a couple late trips to the free-throw line.

Ethan Shreffler led the Trojans with 10 points, while Collier scored nine and Seth Brouse added eight.

Next up for Chambersburg is the PIAA District 3 Class 6A tournament. The Trojans, who earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye, will host either Central York or Warwick on Feb. 22.

“Certainly taking a couple of days off and resting up will be important, and being well-prepared going into the contest is always good,” Shreffler said. “I thought that we were prepared to play tonight, just little things didn’t go our way.”
