A suspected rapist fatally poisoned himself Wednesday while being chased by California police.

The pursuit began around 7:30 a.m. when the Los Angeles Police Department told the California Highway Patrol to look out for a man under investigation, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Officers spotted the suspect driving near Oxnard, and began following him in a slow-speed chase. Police repeatedly asked the suspect to pull over, according to reports.

Cops say they then saw the driver ingest something out of a can, before slumping over the wheel.

The car came to a stop on the center divide of the 101 Highway in Ventura, at which point officers closed in on the vehicle, CBS reports.
