HARVEYVILLE, Kan. — For more than 100 years two churches have been the cornerstones for Harveyville, Kansas. On Tuesday evening, that changed when a tornado ripped through the town of 200.

It destroyed the town’s only Methodist church. The Harveyville United Methodist Church is gone but the pastor says its foundation, the congregation, the core of the church is strong.

“It was a huge church for Harveyville on top of the hill and it was literally just a pile of rubble and it didn’t even look real,” said Pastor Dennis Irwin of the Harveyville United Methodist Church.

What seemed even more unreal to some was the gracious offer from the preacher of the Church of Christ who invited the Methodist church to worship with them.

“We are very grateful to have a place to worship,” said Sonia Irwin with the Methodist Church.

On Sunday, the two preachers from two different denominations stood together to help the community heal. While mother nature destroyed the Methodist Church, Pastor Irwin says God preserved two stained glass windows, something he hopes to use when the new Harveyville Methodist Church is rebuilt.
