FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) - A Fort Payne man is now in jail charged with a home invasion where a woman was sexually assaulted.

Fort Payne police are certainly saying the investigation team had a lot to do with it but so too did the forensics lab.

“Our guys, you don’t know how hard they worked on this case,” said Fort Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum.

Bynum has nothing but praise for his team of detectives after 46-year-old Shane Lee Henagar’s arrest for a May home invasion and sexual assault.

Henagar appeared before a judge Monday for an initial appearance on the charges of burglary, breaking into a motor vehicle, theft, robbery, sexual abuse, and sodomy.

Police say he got inside a home on Forest Avenue on May 5 and sexually assaulted a woman and broke into a car there before escaping after the male homeowner arrived.

Bynum says at first they couldn’t find the person responsible but forensic evidence led them to Henagar.

“We collected some physical evidence. We had an opportunity to take that stuff over to the forensic lab the next day or two and we had to wait on the testing at the lab. Last week, we received a confirmation from the Department of Forensic Sciences lab in Huntsville that we did have a suspect. We were naturally happy and enthusiastic about that,” said Bynum.

Henagar is being held in the DeKalb County Jail on just over $300,000 bond.
