Fire broke out at an after-school care facility in Melbourne's south-east, sending flames soaring from the roof of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

The blaze destroyed a recreation centre which houses a day care facility, wood workshop and swimming pool, located near the Blue Hills Retirement Home on Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne East.

The building was almost burning "end to end" when crews arrived, Country Fire Authority operations officer Paul Summons said.

"The recreational facility is totally destroyed by fire," he said.

"But the good news is that no further damage to any other facilities or the chapel ... were recorded."

The fire has been brought under control.

Although none of the retirement village's units were affected, residents were safely evacuated.

The building is leased by the Judy Clarkson Cranbourne Day Care & Kindergarten Centre for before- and after-school care.

Sharon Smith, a part-owner of the day care centre, said no children were in the building at the time.

"It's an after-school care facility, so no children were there at the time," Ms Smith said.

"And those children who were due to come today have been directed to another facility."

It is believed the fire started in the roof of the building.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene, but no one needed treatment.

The CFA has advised nearby residents to shut doors and windows in order to avoid smoke inhalation.
