Scotland's Dario Franchitti took victory in the Indianapolis 500 after an incident-packed race at the famous American circuit.

The 2012 running of the race, watched by more than 300,000 people at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, proved to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.

The race set a record for the most lead changes in an Indy 500 race as the lead changed hands 35 times during the race - and the action was as dramatic as ever, with wheel-to-wheel racing and spectacular incidents aplenty.

The biggest - and scariest - incident featured British driver Mike Conway, who was extremely lucky to walk away from a massive crash after a disastrous pit stop.

Conway missed his marks and inadvertently ran over his fuel mechanic, leaving his car with a damaged front wing.

When the Brit returned to the circuit the damaged wing led to Conway losing control of his car, which flew into the wall, up and into the air, colliding with IndyCar series leader Will Power.

Miraculously, both Power and Conway were unhurt in the spectacular crash, which nearly caused another huge accident with Helio Castroneves, whose quick thinking saw him narrowly avoid a flying wheel from the incident.  In an astonishing near-miss, the loose wheel actually bounced off the right front tyre of Castroneves' car.

With a handful of laps remaining five cars had a shot of victory, including former F1 driver Takuma Sato and Scot Franchitti, who raced their way to the front with one lap to go.

Sato clearly had the faster car going into the final lap, but his impatience got the better of him as he attempted to pass Franchitti going into turn one, only to lose control of his car and spin into the wall, bringing out a caution flag and handing victory to the Scot, who dedicated the win to his  late friend - and last year's Indy 500 winner - Dan Wheldon, who tragically died in a crash last October.

Perhaps appropriately, three of Wheldon's best friends in Indy racing were battling it out for the win, with Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan finishing 1-2-3 after a breathtaking race.

Third time's a charm: Franchitti became a three-time winner at the famous American race

"Now my face on the Borg-Warner Trophy will be on either side of Dan's," said an emotional Franchitti after the race.

"I want to thank all the fans for saluting our Dan today. What a race."
