Super Bowl commercials 2015: Watch the ads here

The best Super Bowl commercials are memorable, either because they're exceedingly funny, gross us out, or otherwise manage to keep our eyes laser-beam focused on the screen, away from the chips. The worst are just plain boring, not even bad enough to be talked about the next day. In the end, the public is the great decider in such matters.

So, as the Patriots and Seahawks hash things out on the field in Arizona for Super Bowl XLIX, we're feverishly cataloguing the Super Bowl ads, play by play, until the end of the game.

Starring the likes of a despondent lost Labrador, pouty Kim Kardashian West, skeptical Pierce Brosnan, enraged Danny Trejo and laced-up band of supermodels, the showdown of the commercials shall now commence.

Look below for video clips as the commercials air, along with summaries of all the spots. The big (and small) brands will be hawking movies, hamburgers, cars, super glue, insurance, beer, lingerie and more. Sound off in the comments section on your favorite -- and least favorite -- of the big-game ads.

PREGAME

Mountain Dew Kickstart

To advertise its Kickstart drink (it contains the Dew, coconut water and juice), the commercial "Come Alive" goes with the whole "Turn Down for What" technique of intense dancing ... intense dancing not controlled by the dancer (including one groovy dog). For some added fun, this extended version of the spot has an interactive component (click on various items in the living room -- like the painting of a lady -- and you'll get new related videos with closeups of the dancers).

Message: "It All Starts With a Kick".

Vallarta-Nayarit

Visit Mexico's pregame Vallarta-Nayarit ad is actually from 2013, but still sounds fresh.

Message: "Live it to believe it." But also: Visit Vallarta-Nayarit.

'Insurgent'

The latest "Divergent" movie starring Shailene Woodley is due out in March.

Message: See "Insurgent".

'Seventh Son'

In this movie, which is also featured in the pregame ads, Jeff Bridges plays "the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order" and gets double Super Bowl screentime -- since he also stars in an ad for website platform Squarespace. The Universal Picture film will be in theaters Feb. 6. Bridges is mentor to a character played by Ben Barnes -- their foil is Julianne Moore as an evil queen. Here's the extended version of the trailer.

Message: Yes, it's a "Big Lebowski" reunion, dude!

Neil Patrick Harris' variety show on NBC

NPH, hosts of hosts, gives us a small glimpse -- very small -- of his forthcoming primetime variety show on NBC, due out this fall.

Message: More NPH.

NFL Shop

One mom reflects on how her Vikings family became a "Bengals, Eagles, Steelers, Cowboys family," all with the help of the NFL Shop. Not a new spot, but game-related pregame airtime.

Message: NFLShop.com

Reebok

Looks like a whole lotta people doing CrossFit.

The message: "Better, stronger, more determined humans, capable of anything." If you buy Reebok shoes. Reebok makes you human?

'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water'

We've already seen this one, but also part of the pregame ads is the extended trailer of the forthcoming film featuring good ol' Mr. Squarepants and Patrick, his starfish sidekick. Best part: promoters decided to hype the movie by tweeting this ("50 Shades of Yellow/Mr. SpongeBob will see you now.")

Message: February 6 ... SpongeBob! Krabby Patties, etc. etc.

'Jurassic World'

A very serious Chris Pratt ("Guardians of the Galaxy", "Parks and Recreation") is back in another serious trailer for "Jurassic World", the latest much-hyped installment of the "Jurassic Park" franchise.

Message: June 12. Chris Pratt.

FIRST QUARTER

'Minions'

A short film teaser spot for the forthcoming "Despicable Me 2" sequel.

Message: Minions are cute.

And here's a more adorable extended teaser starring Minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob.

'Game of War: Fire Age'

Kate Upton looking as epic as ever in this installment of her game app endorsement career.

Message: Kate Upton.

'Tomorrowland'

A trailer for the Disney sci-fi adventure movie due out in May starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie.

Message: George Clooney. The future past. Disney World.

Chevy Colorado

Look who just pulled a "Sopranos" on us, David Chase-styles! In an ad for the Chevy Colorado, Chevrolet makes us think the power/cable is out -- did you fall for it? The stunt is meant to underscore that if you lose your cable at home, the 2015 Colorado has built-in 4G LTE wi-fi.

Message: "Sopranos".

TurboTax

The tax-preparing website reveals its Big Game ad is a riff on the Boston Tea Party, appropriately enough. With an ... alternate ending.

Message: We remember the Tea Party. And free tax preparation? Mostly the Tea Party.

Toyota Camry

This spot, called "How Great I Am," stars Paralympian snowboarder and former "Dancing with the Stars" competitor Amy Purdy, and is narrated by Muhammad Ali through archival recording.

Message: Greatness. Victory through defeat.

BMW

In a commercial called "Newfangled Idea", the carmaker advertises its i3, a vehicle "built in a wind-powered factory." The draw is the footage from a 1994 installment of "The Today Show" with Katie Couric and Bryant Gumble. The hosts confusedly riff on the "@" symbol. What does it all mean? At? About? "What is Internet, anyway?" Gumbel asks.

Message: "Big ideas take a little getting used to."

Snickers

The candy brand wins big with its "Brady Bunch" ad starring a snarling Danny Trejo as Marcia and the one and only Steve Buscemi as Jan.

Also check the teaser for the ad (below) that has Trejo/Marcia counting the strokes of his/her hair brush with gritted teeth.

Message: "You're Not You When You're Hungry."

SECOND QUARTER

Coca-Cola

The soda brand's #MakeItHappy campaign posits that the web is a place of much negativity, but believes we can turn that negativity around by saying positive things instead.

Message: Who needs dystopian ads when you can drink a Coke?

'Pitch Perfect 2'

Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and their co-stars are back in full effect with the sequel to "Pitch Perfect".

Message: May 15.

Foot Locker

The NBA's Damian Lillard is beseeched by Nick Cannon to make him the face of his Adidas sneaker. Lillard is skeptical ... until he sees other celebs saying hello, too. (N.J.'s own Ian Ziering is one of them.)

Message: Nick Cannon is a better pitchman than Ian Ziering?

Cure.com

"Don't touch your balls, leave your balls alone." Somehow this was part of Cure.com's hashtag-focused ad strategy, by way of a "Deflategate" reference. The auto insurance company aired its spot in two parts.

Message: Being topical pays off, but also ... balls.

Here's both parts:

Squarespace

A chilled-out Jeff Bridges, aka The Dude, "Ommmms" next to a couple's bed. Somehow he is one person who can do this without seeming entirely creepy. This spot for the website-building platform is associated with website dreamingwithjeff.com. There you'll find the teasers that follow (also below), which show how Bridges set up a page to sell his album, "Sleeping Tapes," sales of which go to a charitable effort called No Kid Hungry.

Message: Jeff Bridges is soothing.

More Jeff:

NoMore.org

A 30-second spot was donated by the NFL to NoMore.org, which supports the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault. The ad focuses on a recording of a 911 call in which a woman sounds like she's ordering a pizza but is really facing an attack in her home -- footage of a house littered with overturned furniture plays on screen, showing what happened after the call.

Message: "When it's hard to talk, it's up to us to listen."

Lexus NX

This "Make Some Noise" ad puts the Toyota car(s) in a fancy parking deck. The spot came out weeks ago. The vehicles soar around the space as loud staccato sounds play -- like doors closing? Eh.

Message: Doors closing.

Budweiser

The sequel to the 2014 Super Bowl ad "Puppy Love" again stars a Labrador retriever puppy (in reality, various puppies were used for the shoot), this time heroically rescued from a wolf by the Clydesdale horses. All of this is set to a very doleful-sounding version of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by Sleeping at Last. Puppies. Sadness. Heroism. Happiness. Boom.

Message: Puppies and horses never lose. Not even to wolves.

'Terminator: Genisys'

Paramount's 30-second trailer for the latest "Terminator" flick. "New Threat. New Mission. New Fate." Arnold Schwarzenegger is ... back ... in the film, which is due out July 1. And ... surprise ... he wheels out that old chestnut "I'll be back" again.

Message: He came back.

T-Mobile

"Kim Kardashian West, Famous Person" riffs on her selfies to promote the carrier's data plan. "Hi, I'm Kim," she says. "Each month, millions of gigs of unused data are taken back by wireless companies. Tragic."

Message: "Keep your unused data up to a year" ... with T-Mobile.

Avocados From Mexico

The avocado marketer's "First Draft Ever" ad is set "about four billion years ago" and stars NFL vets Jerry Rice and Doug Flutie and a caveman, as well as a polar bear, sloth, kangaroo, lemur, dodo bird ... and surprise ... an avocado (it doesn't talk). A nice outside-the-box approach from the produce campaign's first go at the Super Bowl.

Message: The #FirstDraftEver was not gluten-free, but avocados are!

'Dig'

A new global-thriller murder mystery series from USA Network premiering in March.

Message: Here's another TV show you might/might not watch.

'Fast & Furious 7'

Trailer for the latest film in the street-racing action series, which is really just called "Furious 7", and stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jersey's own Michelle Rodriguez and the late Paul Walker.

Message: RIP Paul Walker.

Dove Men+Care

This is a commercial about fatherhood - a 60-second version of the 30-second #RealStrength campaign with all these kids/grown kids addressing their fathers and saying "Dad" or "Daddy". From Dove/YouTube: "90% of men around the world say that their caring side is part of their masculinity and strength. Let's acknowledge the caring side of men and celebrate their #RealStrength as a true sign of masculinity."

Message: Embrace the softer side of man soap.

Nationwide

Forget Peyton Manning. We've got Mindy Kaling for Nationwide Insurance this time. The "Invisible Mindy Kaling". You see, "after years of being treated like she was invisible, it occurred to Mindy, she might actually be invisible". Cue Kaling sitting naked in Central Park, eating ice cream in a supermarket and walking through a car wash. Eventually asking if Matt Damon can kiss her, just to be sure she's really there.

Message: #InvisibleMindy isn't so invisible, but ... Matt Damon.

Nationwide

Not so fast with the light tone. Nationwide is back with another -- this time serious -- spot reminding us that "The #1 cause of childhood deaths is preventable accidents." This points us to the company's child safety campaign at makesafehappen.com

Message: Safety, not Mindy Kaling.

Weight Watchers

Yes, fill up on all those snacks, but Weight Watchers is here to make you feel guilty. An ad that's blunt yet passive aggressive at the same time!

Message: Put down the chips.

WeatherTech

The company sells floors liners for cars. Its "America at Work" campaign focuses on employees and the design of the liners.

Message: Your car is dirty.

McDonald's

"Starting February 2, we will be randomly accepting a new form of payment," McDonald's says. So starting tomorrow, you can hope that you'll be randomly selected for its "Pay With Lovin'" campaign. Through Feb. 14, a lucky group of customers will be able to pay with compliments, a call to mom, a dance, a group hug, a fist-bump or by blowing a kiss.

Message: Free food, maybe.

Fiat

The spot for the Fiat 500X is Euro in feel, but is based on a universally known fact: the little blue pill gives a little something extra. One makes its way into the gas tank of said Fiat ... and voila.

Message: Cars are sex?

GoDaddy

This ad, called "Working," is dedicated to small-business owners. But this ad also supplants one that the website platform pulled shortly before the Super Bowl ... the one with the puppy. Notice the mention of puppy here.

Message: Our ad was pulled. Boo puppies.

GoDaddy pulled another ad called "Journey Home" from the game after outrage ensued when the company debuted the ad the spot on "The Today Show". The ad features a woman who, for some reason, decides to sell her incredibly adorable puppy via a website she built on GoDaddy. Buddy the puppy makes it all the way home -- Budweiser style -- only for the woman to ship him out to the buyer.

Here's the pulled ad:

Skittles

The candy brand goes with an old-fashioned arm-wrestling challenge, instead of any number of teasers it debuted earlier this month. Prize of said arm-wrestling match: a lemon Skittle.

Message: Where the hell is Mr. Skittles, Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch?

Nissan

This ad, about a race car-driver dad and his family, is linked to the carmaker's #WithDad campaign. In the company's words, "#withdad follows the struggles of a hardworking and close-knit family striving for togetherness across the years."

Message: Nissan is family and struggle?

Carnival

The victor of Carnival's Super Bowl ad contest is a John F. Kennedy-narrated ad called "Come Back to the Sea" in which the former president offers a meditation on the sea. Majestic, spare and poetic.

Message: JFK. The Ocean. Take a cruise.

Doritos

The winner of Doritos' Super Bowl ad contest gets $1 million. So congratulations to the mind behind "Middle Seat", about a man on a plane who has some stomach issues.

Message: IBS can be smelly. So do/don't eat Doritos?

Esurance

Bryan Cranston as Walter White from "Breaking Bad" -- here standing in for a local pharmacist -- makes this spot, titled "Say My Name", ("Breaking Bad" fans will get it) an instant draw. Who needs a CGI baby, a puppy or a model?

Message: Walter White always wins.

Another one for Esurance

Here's the other Esurance ad that aired tonight, starring Lindsay Lohan. Titled "Sorta Your Mom", the spot has Lohan trying to pick up a confused child from school. You're not my mom, he explains. Might as well be, we're both 25 to 35, she replies before sloppily driving away, underscoring Esurance's mission to custom-tailor auto insurance to the customer.

Message: Lindsay Lohan has been in her share of ... accidents. Your mom isn't Lindsay Lohan.

'Today'

The ad for NBC's "Today" is called "Rise to Shine," set to Coldplay's "Sky Full of Stars". Walking down city streets is a smiling Matt Lauer, a buoyant Al Roker, cheery Natalie Morales, jubilant Savannah Guthrie, grinning Carson Daly ... you get it. In the middle of the commercial, a woman inexplicable holds a puppy up to a window ... guess you can't go wrong with even one second of puppy (its name is Wrangler).

Message: "Tell us what makes your morning shine" ... even if it's not them?

Discover

Proving that screaming goats were great as a viral video is this ad from the credit card company that's all about avoiding credit surprises of the credit report variety.

Message: Screaming goats are the best.

'The Blacklist'

James Spader gets a chunk of Super Bowl ad time because he has a show on NBC ... one airing right after the game. Here's a very smooth promo for the primetime series.

Message: James Spader.

Microsoft

The rapper Common narrates this ad that focuses not on PCs, but prostheses for children, as demonstrated by the story of Braylon O'Neill.

Message: Microsoft technology is more than PCs and the Surface.

Toyota Camry

A dad watches as his daughter ships off to fulfill her military duty.

Message: A good Camry is always there ... like a good dad.

NBC's 'A.D.: The Bible continues'

NBC is teasing everything ... and that doesn't leave out religious programming! "On any given Sunday, miracles can happen." Are they talking about HBO?

Message: Easter Sunday, it's going down.

HALFTIME

Pepsi

The beverage company uses alien abduction imagery to propel us into the halftime show, also sponsored by Pepsi.

Message: Katy Perry is near.

New York Presbyterian Hospital

In a spot for the hospital called "Amazing Things", boxer Daniel Jacobs talks about how he was paralyzed by a tumor that wrapped itself around his spine. After surgery at NY Presbyterian, doctors were able to rebuilt his spine. "They resurreced my career," he says. "They gave me a second chance at life." Message: Amazing = miraculous.

Geico

Released last year, this Geico ad starts Salt-N-Pepa.

Message: Push it, push it real good.

Geico, again

"What's Cooking? With Ickey" sees the return of the cold cut guy from another Geico ad. He shows us how to make "The Ickster," his signature sandwich. It's easy: Take away the bread and any condiments. Eat the cold cuts.

Message: "WHEEWWW."

'The Voice'

NBC's vocal competition series -- and judges Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine -- gets a piece of the Super Bowl pie.

Message: 'The Voice' is now a cage match?

Always

The company repackaged its viral "Like A Girl" ad, but the message is still there, and it has less to do with feminine care products than how identity is molded by society during puberty.

Message: Something very telling happens when girls hit a certain age -- what does that say about all of us?

Ecuador

This tourism commercial for Ecuador, "All You Need is Ecuador", is set to the pleasing melody of "All You Need is Love". Message: #AllYouNeedIsEcuador is all you need.

Skechers

Pete Rose stars in this ad for the shoe company. He walks down the hall in his own house, and is admonished for it. He's not supposed to be in the hall ... geddit?

Message: Pete Rose stays comfortable, sometimes.

THIRD AND FOURTH QUARTERS

Loctite

The maker of super glue is hoping you'll want to #WinAtGlue after seeing this vibrant ad called "Positive Feelings". In it, dancing people wear red Loctite fanny packs while various items -- like a pair of glasses -- are handily mended with the help of the glue that is so handily at the ready, inside the packs. A hilarious, gyrating ad directed by Tim and Eric, of Adult Swim fame. Can you tell?

Message: "Loctite glue saved our marriage." Also, if this ad doesn't make you wanna dance even just a little, seek help.

'Fifty Shades of Grey'

Haven't we seen this one before? Oh yes, we have (this trailer boasts that another trailer for the movie has drawn 250 million views) ... and we will for many more weeks to come! Despite some slight alterations, this is much of the same material already previewed for the film based on the hugely successful E.L. James book, due out on Valentine's Day.

Message: "Fifty Shades of Grey".

T-Mobile

Kim Kardashian West isn't the only face of T-Mobile this year. There's also Sarah Silverman and Jersey's Chelsea Handler. To emphasize the utility of the carrier's wi-fi calling feature, two comedians call each other from a hydroponic kale garden, mansion, trophy room, figure-skating basement, subterranean petting zoo and underground baby delivery room.

The message: T-Mobile is all about the women ... and the funnywomen.

Mercedes-Benz

In "The Big Race", also referred to as "Fable", it's the tortoise vs. the hare. This CGI spot even has a snail outpacing our turtle protagonist ... until he scores a "hare/hair-raising" 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S.

Message: Anyone who has a Mercedes can be fast.

'Clash of Clans'

Liam Neeson is playing "Clash of Clans" on his phone, and he's angry. "Angry Neeson52" just lost to BigBuffetBoy85 ... which is a problem. "Oh, I'm coming for you with lots of barbarians and dragons," Neeson vows, in a "Taken" style. "I can't wait to destroy your village while you beg for mercy. But you will get no mercy. I will have my revenge." Interrupting Neeson's revenge-plotting is an employee of the cafe he's in, announcing there's a scone ready for "Lye-am."

Message: Liam Neeson can apply this character to anything, to hilarious effect. Also: There will be no mercy.

Scientology

The church is back with another Super Bowl spot called "Age of Answers".

Message: "Scientology."

'Heroes Charge'

Game developer uCool banks some big change on its first Super Bowl ad, a spot for the mobile game "Heroes Charge" featuring scenes from the app.

Message: Fire. Rocks. Fire!

'Ted 2'

Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane are back with the sequel, and this time, a newly married Ted (he got hitched to Tami-Lynn) wants to have a kid. The problem: Ted the bear has to prove he's a person to be a parent. Also starring are Amanda Seyfried and Morgan Freeman. Out June 26.

Message: Talking teddy bears entertain us.

'The Royals' on E!

Move over, Kim K. Another family is coming to E! -- the royal family. "The Royals" is an actual scripted show, starring Elizabeth Hurley.

Message: Elizabeth Hurley.

Mophie

In an ad called "All-Powerless," Mophie, a company that sells smartphone cases and mobile chargers, imagines what happens when a very important person forgets to charge their phone. (Something resembling armageddon is involved)

Message: Bad things happen when phones aren't charged.

Microsoft, again

Microsoft's second ad of the evening, "Estella's Brilliant Bus", stars Estella Pyfrom, a bus driver whose Brilliant Bus functions as a technology learning station for underserved communities. The spot is part of the company's #empowering campaign.

Message: What is technology without access?

Dodge

Centenarians ... a series of them ... impart their wisdom to us in this spot, aptly called "Wisdom", in celebration of Dodge's recent 100-year anniversary. Some of their suggestions: Live for now, stay young, always tell the truth, keep your eyes open (and sometimes your mouth shut), don't complain, tell it like it is, hesitate and you lose, and never, ever, forget where you came from."

Message: Listen to these people.

Jublia

Because toenail fungus needs to be knocked the hell out, by toes with cute lil' boxing gloves.

Message: Side effect: ingrown toenails.

Bud Light

The ad "Coin" features a real-life version of a Pac-Man game.

"If I gave you a Bud Light, are you up for whatever happens next?" someone asks a  man. He heads outside with friends and puts a giant coin in a giant slot, then enters an arena to play a life-size version of Pac-Man as an audience cheers him on, Bud Lights in hand.

The message: "Up For Whatever". And you can't lose with Pac-Man.

Wix.com

The website-building platform, in its first Super Bowl ad, emphasizes the utility of websites for small business. The company's #ItsThatEasy campaign stars NFL vets Larry Allen, Terrell Owens, Brett Favre, Emmitt Smith and Franco Harris. The takeaway moment is when former quarterback Brett Favre and Rex Lee (you'll remember him as Lloyd in "Entourage") focus on Favre's websit for his imagined "Favre & Carve" business. "It's charcuterie," he says.

Message: Favre & Carve should be a real thing.

Sprint

Proving videos of screaming farm animals have been "a thing" in recent years, Sprint also shows Discover isn't the only company to notice this.

Message: "EEEEEEE!"

Doritos ... again

"Hey, Ralph, can I have a Dorito?" a boy asks. "Sure," Ralph replies. "When pigs fly." The boy plots an operation to solve his problem, appends rocket to pig, and gets his chip. So goes the second ad from Doritos this Super Bowl, titled "When Pigs Fly".

Message: This kid really wants a Dorito.

Kia Sorento

"The Perfect Getaway" spot stars Pierce Brosnan, who, being the former face of James Bond, expects explosions and other adventure in a script for a car commercial (for the 2016 Kia Sorento) that he'll star in -- instead he gets a quite drive up to a mountain summit. Here's the extended version of the ad.

Message: Pierce Brosnan wishes he was still James Bond?

Lexus

The "Let's Play" spot is much better than the last one, or at least more memorable. Cars ... sliding. Like cars ... dancing?

Message: Cars, sliding.

Victoria's Secret

The lingerie purveyor, unlike its game-day teaser, actually delivered on the lingerie with this ad.

Message: Women in football outfits don't sell lingerie? For good measure, the original teaser is included here below the actual ad.

The earlier spot, teased online, was called "Don't Drop the Ball", and starred Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Swanepoel, Adriana Lima and Behati Prinsloo as football players. This ad employs something of a fakeout technique. You see the usual shoulder pads and cleats, but they're not really football players! The dramatic, movie-trailer music builds to a climax as we learn -- they're all supermodels (no!).

Jeep

The car company sets its ad for the Jeep Renegade to the song "This Land is Your Land", as performed by Marc Scibilia.

Message: "The word is a gift. Play responsibly." But really, it's that they couldn't go all that wrong with a good song that's all too familiar to us.

Budweiser ... again

The third Bud ad of the night focuses on the brewing process.

Message: "Let them sip their pumpkin peach ale. We'll be brewing us some golden suds." Oooh.

POST-GAME

NBC for NASCAR

"America Start Your Engines" stars Nick Offerman, NBC's all-American man, talking NASCAR. And who better? "When our idea of danger is eating gluten, there's trouble afoot," the sage "Parks and Recreation" star advises. "Yes, we the people have gotten soft and all the 'likes' in the world aren't gonna save us more." The solution? NASCAR, which returns to NBC Sports in July. And now, thanks to Offerman's little ditty, we can't forget. Here's the extended version.

Message: NASCAR is America. Nick Offerman is America. Nick Offerman is NASCAR.

WEST COAST

Carl's Jr.

This ad (the one below is the extended version) drew a fair bit of attention from all corners even though it just aired on the West Coast. Model Charlotte McKinney, 21, appears to appear in the buff for most of this commercial, hawking an "all-natural" hamburger ... you know, "au-naturel." Geddit???

Message: Skin also sells hormone-free hamburgers.

THE ALTERNA-AD

Newcastle Brown Ale's #BandofBrands

Running with the idea that it couldn't afford a big Super Bowl ad, this beer brand teamed with other brands. The result: a super-ad campaign for Newcastle along with Rotel diced tomatoes, Beanitos bean chips, Match.com, Armstrong flooring, Brawny paper towels and more (37 brands altogether).

Message: We might just be so distracted that this is the way to go.

"Parks and Recreation" star Aubrey Plaza figured in two teasers for the concept:
