Three Syracuse firefighters injured in North Side house fire

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Three firefighters were injured and hospitalized Friday fighting a North Side house fire in the city that forced five people from their homes.

A neighbor reported the fire around 8:35 a.m. at an apartment at 116-118 Kenwood Ave.

A Syracuse police officer arrived at the fire before firefighters and went into the apartment to help two people out from the first floor. The officer suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene.

When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was coming from the attic of the house. The fire was put out in about 15 minutes.

The fire caused a large hole to open between the attic and the second floor. Crews had to cut a hole in the roof to let out smoke.

The three injured firefighters were taken to the hospital and were expected to be released later Friday, Paul Motondo, president of the Syracuse Fire Fighters Association Local 280, said in a Facebook post.

"Please keep these men in your prayers," he said.
