A seven-year-old Tyler resident is dead after a car crash Feb. 4 in Smith County.

A pedestrian died earlier this week after being struck by a car while walking into oncoming traffic on Texas Highway 31 near Athens, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS troopers responded to the crash at about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release sent Friday.

The DPS said its preliminary crash investigation showed that Chloee Alyssa Raley, 20, of Athens, was driving a 2016 Dodge Dart in the right lane of Highway 31 West when she struck a pedestrian who walked from the center of the road into the right lane in front of her car.

The department said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken to American Forensics in Mesquite for an autopsy.

The pedestrian's name has not been released, according to the DPS, which said the next of kin had not been notified.
