Missouri State’s game-winning touchdown comes on final play
Missouri State had four downs and 54 seconds to travel five yards Saturday afternoon at Indiana State, and the Bears needed all of their plays and most of the time to beat the Sycamores 29-26.
Lorenzo Thomas caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Huslig on fourth down with 16 seconds left in Terre Haute, Ind., to give Missouri State the Missouri Valley Conference win.
Donovan Daniels (Webster Groves) ran for two touchdowns in the first half for the Bears.
Indiana State outgained Missouri State 440-352, and the Bears’ defense surrendered 141 yards and three rushing touchdowns by Ja’Quan Keys.
But Missouri State (2-1 in the MVC, 4-2 overall) held Indiana State to a field goal late in the game before its 84-yard drive to win the game. The Bears reached the 5-yard line with 54 seconds left but gained only 1 yard on their first three plays before the winning TD was scored.

Washington University 17, Wheaton 10 • The Bears’ defense registered 10 sacks and Johnny Davidson threw two touchdown passes to lead the upset of the Thunder, which are ranked No. 12 in Division III. The Bears moved into a tie for second place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin thanks to their defense.
Washington University (4-1 in the CCIW, 5-1 overall) beat a ranked opponent for the first time since October 2010.
It was a defensive-oriented contest in which each team punted nine times. Bears linebacker Jake Coon had 11 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. Washington U. linebacker Jarrod Huther registered four tackles for loss and two sacks, and defensive lineman Peter Pigatti had 3½ sacks.
McKendree 26, Southwest Baptist 23 • The Bearcats tied the Great Lakes Valley Conference game with 59 seconds left in regulation and then won in overtime in Bolivar, Mo., when quarterback Antonio Triplett (Hazelwood Central) scored on a 1-yard dive. Preston Thompson ran for 115 yards and a touchdown for McKendree (2-1 in the GLVC, 4-3 overall), which trailed 17-0 after one quarter and 20-7 midway through the third quarter.
Thompson’s 28-yard touchdown run and a 24-yard TD pass from Triplett to Jalyn Williams forced the overtime.
Southeast Missouri State 31, Austin Peay 27 • Marquis Terry ran for a 2-yard touchdown with 15 seconds remaining to boost the Redhawks at Cape Girardeau, Mo. Daniel Santacaterina passed for 344 yards and Jerrick Orr had six catches for 163 yards. One of those catches went for 37 yards with SEMO facing fourth-and-14 on the final drive. The Redhawks (2-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, 4-2 overall) and Governors traded the lead five times.
Illinois State 51, Southern Illinois Carbondale 3 • James Robinson rushed for 202 yards and Brady Davis threw four touchdown passes to lead the host Redbirds, who are ranked No. 12 in the Football Championship Subdivision. Illinois State (5-1, 2-1 in the MVC) led 10-0 before Davis threw TD passes of 10, 3 and 4 yards to stretch the lead to 31-0 at halftime in the MVC game. The Redbirds had 409 rushing yards while the Salukis (1-5, 0-3) had 202 yards of total offense.
Missouri S&T 59, William Jewell 21 • Tyler Swart threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, and the Miners scored on nine of their first 10 possessions in the GLVC win in Rolla, Mo. Missouri S&T (2-1 in the GLVC, 5-2 overall) amassed 432 of its 565 yards in the first two quarters. Deshawn Jones ran for 120 yards, and three Miners quarterbacks completed passes to 10 receivers.
Lindenwood 38, Northeastern State 14 • Cameron Sanders rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown, and six different players scored for the Lions in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game in Tahlequah, Okla. Lindenwood (3-4 in the MIAA, 3-4 overall) led 14-0 at halftime thanks to a 7-yard scoring run by Nash Sutherlin and 43-yard TD pass from Case Brister to Payton Rose. D’Harius Brown then broke the game open by returning the opening kickoff in the second half 83 yards for a touchdown.
Concordia 28, Missouri Baptist 7 • Concordia, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, scored three second-quarter touchdowns and then held the visiting Spartans scoreless in the second half to pull off the Mid-State Football Association win in Ann Arbor, Mich. Missouri Baptist (1-2 in the MSFA, 2-5 overall) had two more yards of total offense than the Cardinals and recorded 18 first downs to the host’s 15, but scored its only points on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Chase Brown to Isaiah King.
St. Francis (Ill.) 55, Lindenwood-Belleville 0 • Dwayne Milton rushed for 249 yards and three touchdowns and Don Butkus threw for four TDs as the Fighting Saints handed the Lynx their 27th consecutive loss in a game played at Joliet, Ill. St. Francis amassed 607 yards and LU-Belleville (0-3 in the MSFA, 0-7 overall) had only 178 with two turnovers.
