Photos and video: Tulsa native Bill Hader wins Primetime Emmy for his HBO comedy series 'Barry'
Tulsa native Bill Hader won the trophy for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series at the tonight's 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
He won for playing the title role of a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest who falls in love with acting while on a job in Los Angeles on the HBO series "Barry."
"Uh, I did not think this was gonna happen," Hader said, looking legitimately startled as he accepted the trophy from presenter Michael Douglas.
Hader said he shared the award with his co-stars and gave a shout-out to his three daughters.
Backstage, Hader said he was genuinely surprised to win the award.
“I planned nothing. I was literally waiting for Ted (Danson) or Donald (Glover), to be honest, which I was like, 'Oh, that'll be cool.' And when he said my name, I legit don’t know what I said up there, guys, so I might have said something crazy," he said, laughing.
"I just had to ask my publicist what I said up there. ... “It’s totally surreal to me. It was surreal when we got the nominations. The whole thing is very surreal. You grow up watching the show going, ‘That’d be pretty cool and what would I say?’ And then I won and I don’t know what I said."
As previously reported, Hader received multiple Emmy nods for the series he co-created with Alec Berg. He is nominated for best lead actor in a comedy series for playing He and Berg are nominated for outstanding writing for a comedy series for penning the first episode, and Hader also got a nod for directing “Chapter 1: Make Your Mark.” "Barry" also was nominated for best comedy series, but it lost out in all those categories to Amazon's “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."
"Barry" did manage to snag one of more Emmy Award: for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for Henry Winkler, who won the award 42 years after the first of three straight nominations for playing his breakout role of Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the 1970s smash "Happy Days." The long-awaited victory was made even more special because Winkler got to share it with another Oklahoma native: Duncan's own Ron Howard, his longtime co-star on "Happy Days," with whom Winkler shared a selfie during the festivities.
