Spazju Kreattiv, in collaboration with China Cultural Centre in Malta, is screening the film Wolf Totem at St James Cavalier Cinema tomorrow at 7.30pm.

The 2015 drama film is about young Beijing students Chen Zhen (Feng Shaofeng) and Yang Ke (Shawn Dou) who are sent to live among the nomadic herdsmen of Inner Mongolia to teach them during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. They join the family farm of a Mongolian elderly man, Bilig (Basen Zhabu), and his daughter-in-law, Gasma (Ankhnyam Ragchaa).

The Mongolians adore wolves and nature, while the Han people are busy occupying the land. After having spent some time with the wolves on the steppes, Chen learns about the wolf population, becomes curious about the animal, and even wants to keep a baby wolf.

But when a government official named Bao Shungui (Yin Zhusheng) orders the people of his farm to kill all the wolves in the region, this creates enormous tension between people and wolf packs. Hence, relations between man and nature face unprecedented challenges.

Directed by French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, this Chinese-French co-production is based on the 2004 Chinese semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Jiang Rong.

Wolf Totem will be screened at St James Cavalier Cinema, Castille Place, Valletta, tomorrow at 7.30pm. The 120-minute film is in Mandarin Chinese, with English subtitles. It is rated 12A. For tickets and to watch a trailer of the film, visit https://www.kreattivita.org/en/event/wolf-totem .
