Story Details on Neill Blomkamp's Sci-Fi Comedy 'Chappie' Revealed

Exciting day for science fiction geeks! In addition to a new synopsis for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Sony has followed up and confirmed a new plot synopsis for Neill Blomkamp's Chappie. After Blomkamp's Elysium opened #1 at the box office this past weekend, Sony has put out a press release announcing they're partnering with Media Rights Capital to co-produce, co-finance and distribute his next film Chappie, which will star Sharlto Copley (as reported before). In the press release is an actual one-line synopsis for the sci-fi comedy, explaining that Copley will be voicing a robot (seen above from the short Tetra Vaal) that is stolen.
Here is the portion of the Sony press release which contains the new Chappie plot info and casting details:
Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. Sharlto Copley, star of Blomkamp’s District 9 and Elysium, will voice the robot. Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, will play the gangsters.
Sounds exactly like what Blomkamp was mentioning when referencing back to Tetra Vaal in this story from June. Production will begin "this fall" on the film being directed by Blomkamp from a script he wrote with Terri Tatchell (District 9). Commenting on the news, production president Doug Belgrad stated: "We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker. Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have. We love the script he and Terri have written and we’re looking forward to working again with our friends at MRC." Now that we've seen Elysium, I'm already ready for the next Blomkamp movie. Bring on the robot heist madness.

Right? Like, I'm surprised Harmony Korine is not behind this project. I think Die Antwoord have some unique chops for comedy. And it's in SPACE. Awesome.

I loved Elysium. A lot. More than most. But I get the feeling that Chappie will be the film most people wanted following D9. It just sounds so bizarre and unique, and with the return to a smaller budget, it will allow Blomkamp to get freakishly creative. Also can't wait to see the return of the Briaros ears!!
