Letters: It's a Notre Dame football game, not war

Staff reports
South Bend Tribune

On Oct. 26, prior to the Notre Dame-North Carolina State football game, a headline in the sports section read "Heavy battle anticipated in trenches."

Oh my, I thought, we are going to war with North Korea. The article was about a simple football game.

Well, whoever wrote the headline, how can you compare a football game with a military occupation? Look up the meaning of trench. It sure does not describe a simple football game! I have harped on this subject before through these channels and will continue to do so every four or five years as needed. Also, as I have said before, former Notre Dame football player and veteran Rocky Bleier has done both. Ask him the difference between a line of scrimmage and a trench.

Gesture

The Tribune reported that the South Bend Common Council approved a 2018 budget that "earmarks more than $1 million to build a homeless intake center, south of downtown, to house a warming center." Coincidentally, The Tribune also reported that Notre Dame is to receive a $100 million windfall — er, "unrestricted philanthropic gift" — from a 1978 graduate. Wouldn't it be great if Notre Dame gave 1 percent of their gift to the city of South Bend to fund the building of the homeless intake center and help our community? That would be a very loving gesture from a Christian university.

Paramedics

I'm a resident of Trinity Tower who would like to express my gratitude to all of the paramedics for their professional medical services. The paramedics have carried me twice to the emergency room at Memorial Hospital and they gave me the best of medical service. They are also very patient and thorough.

It's time

Republicans, who have taken money from the NRA, say it is too soon to talk about gun legislation after the Texas shooting, that we are disrespecting the victims. If that is the case, then I have an idea: Is it alright to talk about legislation, but only reference Las Vegas? That was well over a month ago and we have already mourned those who were killed senselessly because Republicans have already said no to banning bump stocks. So I guess the waiting period is 30 days.
