An animal mistreatment charge is pending against an Onalaska man who authorities said threw a dog into a hot car, where it spent more than an hour in sweltering temperatures, according to La Crosse police reports.
A Gundersen Medical Center security officer said the dog barely responded when he tapped on the window of the car parked on Denton Street Friday afternoon.
The security guard opened an unlocked door to let heat escape before Derrik Fox, 29, approached and swore at him, according to reports. Fox removed the dog, a 3-year-old Russian Pomeranian named Princess, before throwing it back into the car, reports stated.
A La Crosse officer found Fox walking with the dog but he refused to listen to the officer and resisted arrest. He had a 0.25 percent preliminary alcohol level.
The temperature had reached 105 degrees inside the car. The dog was taken to the Coulee Region Humane Society.
