WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Current Wausau School Board Clerk, Mary Thao, has announced that she plans on running for the District 10 seat on the Wausau City Council next year.
The District 10 seat is currently held by Sherry Abitz, who compared a Hmong peace rally to a KKK rally in an email to Thao. Thao says that has nothing to do with her running for the city council.
“I believe Sherry Abitz has served our community well in the many years that she has offered her servant leadership,” said Thao. “If that was my one desire on why I am running, then I should not run.”
Abitz would later apologize to Thao for her comments. Thao says that she has moved on from the incident and doesn’t have any hard feelings against Abitz.
Thao says she’s very interested in the economic development opportunities facing the City of Wausau.
“We have the mall that’s in the air right now with the lost opportunity with the movie theatre coming in. To us developing the river district. I want people to know that I am very interested in building economic prosperity for the entire City of Wausau,” she said.
Thao says that if she is elected she has no plans of vacating her spot with the Wausau School Board.
The election will be held on April 3rd.
