Mahlambi has reportedly been identified as a direct replacement for Tau, who is at the centre of a mammoth R50 million offer from English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

It has been previously reported that Sundowns had already begun negotiations with the 20-year-old star and were mulling over the idea of bringing him on loan.

However, according to the players’ agent Glyn Binkin, a move is yet to materialise as the player is the yet to be assessed by Al Ahly’s new coach.

The Red Devils recently appointed Patrice Carteron to the hot seat, and Mahlambi who has only been a bit part player since joining Al Ahly may look to impress the new coach.

“No decisions have been made as yet regarding Phakamani. There is a new coach at the club who wants to see the player first before any decisions are made about his future,” Binkin was quoted as saying by Egyptian publication KingFut as saying.

Mahlambi is no stranger to interest from the eight-time Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions. The former Bidvest Wits playmaker was believed to be on the radar of the club prior to his move to Egypt.

Nonetheless, with speculation rife, Sundowns too have remained coy on the move. Speaking to PowerFM, the Brazilians' spokesman Thulani Thuswa could not confirm nor deny the acquisition of the Bafana Bafana international.

“I cannot reveal whether we have signed Phakamani Mahlambi or not. The matter is sensitive at this point,” Thuswa told PowerSport.
