Concerts Around Malibu & LA County: This Week In Music

Here's a Q&A with musician Jacky Vincent, a former member of Falling in Reverse. Plus, a list of live music this week around LA County.

MALIBU, CA – There are a ton of great shows to catch this week in Los Angeles County, and we've gathered a list of live music from twenty of the county's top music venues for this week's round-up. From blues, to throwbacks, to indie rock, and electronic, there's something for everyone to see.

Patch caught up with Jacky Vincent, an English musician who was in the rock band Falling in Reverse, and now performs solo. His first solo album was released in 2013, but Life Imitating Art was released earlier this year and includes some incredibly intricate guitar riffs. Jacky Vincent performs at 7 p.m. on September 15 at the White Oak Music Hall.

EH: What (or who) inspires you to create?

JV: I’ve never really consciously known the source that sparks the desire to create. But inspiration can be ignited for me by hearing other music, seeing a painting or even seeing an artistic sketch on a notepad. Musical ideas are always blasting out of me in a seemingly uncontrollable fashion.

EH: I can’t imagine the discipline it must have taken for you to learn how to play guitar so intricately. How has your style evolved since you started?

JV: As a kid I used to sit learning Iron Maiden albums from back to front. And before then I would play Green Day and Guns N’ Roses songs all day. Then when I was around 15 I discovered players like Jason Becker, Herman Li and Michael Angelo Batio, and I really decided that this is what I wanted to do with my life. I was so blown away when

I discovered Michael Angelo Batio that I was running around the room shouting “no way!”

Since then I have immersed myself in many different styles as I want to learn and understand as much as possible.

EH: What’s the most difficult part of the music making process for you?

JV: The most difficult part for me is having a deadline that I have to meet. This is why I like to make music at my own pace these days. It can take a while for me to get a release together as I am somewhat of a perfectionist with some OCD traits haha.

EH: What advice would you give a young guitarist who wants to learn how to shred like you?

JV: Get a good teacher! And listen to what they tell you. Learn from anyone and everyone and memorize the boring stuff. You will transmute the boring stuff into fun stuff over time when it becomes second nature to use music theory to your advantage. The best piece of advice I could give anyone wanting to play fast is to breathe when you play. Don’t tense up and hold your breath, you may end up with wrist and hand problems later in life. It should be completely effortless for you to play fast once your muscle memory has kicked in. The way to gain these results is to practice very slowly for many many hours to a backing track or metronome so that your brain and hands can absorb the musical information.

EH: Do you prefer performing with a band or solo? Why?

JV: I love both but you can never beat the feeling of being up on stage and interacting with your band mates. Although solo performances are much more of a challenge so I enjoy this. I have to stay challenged musically.

Jacky Vincent is performing at 7 p.m. on September 15 at the White Oak Music Hall.
