Player-manager Peter Murphy has boosted his attacking options at Annan Athletic ahead of their league game at Berwick Rangers.

Former Stirling Albion striker Blair Henderson was confirmed as the Galabankies' latest forward recruit yesterday.

Ironically Berwick Rangers, who Annan play this afternoon at Shielfield Park (3pm kick-off), is one of Henderson's former clubs.

Murphy's men will be coming into the game in high spirits as they look to build on their 3-1 win over Celtic's Under-20s on Tuesday night.

Young striker Aidan Smith scored a hat-trick for Athletic in the victory in the Irn-Bru Cup, although former Carlisle United player Murphy was keen to point out the club had a lot of talented youngsters.

He said: "We have got a lot of young players. We have a young lad from Dunfermline [Brandon Luke] who has just come in, but we have a mix of experience, as well."

The Black and Golds will now be looking to build on their cup win in midweek and earn their first Scottish League Two points of the season.

Today's match will present one of the shorter journeys for the Annan faithful, although there will still be a considerable amount of travelling involved for some of Athletic's players.

"It's close. But it's sort of like with Carlisle United where there are no really close games," Murphy said.

"It's going to be a two-hour drive with some of our players coming from Glasgow, as well. It's close for us but it's still quite a distance."

Berwick finished eighth in the league last term and have taken three points from their first two league matches this term.

On the prospect of his Annan side getting off the mark against the Borderers, Murphy said: "These games are all winnable but also losable.

"We have to concentrate on the game that comes next. We have to be prepared for it."
