Santa Clara County high school students are getting the chance to honor late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the annual “Justice For All” poster contest held by the District Attorney’s Office.
“Justice Ginsburg once said: ‘To make life a little better for people less fortunate than you, that is what I think a meaningful life is. One lives not just for oneself but for one’s community.’ The Justice found that meaning, fighting for equality — and living it, with intelligence, hard work, dignity and charm,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a release. “She has been a major influence on so many people, including my wife, my daughters, and me.”
Students have until Jan. 11, 2021 to submit their poster designs that illustrate the legacy of the groundbreaking jurist known as the Notorious RBG and the power of inspiration. Winners will be announced Jan. 22, and the top three submissions will be awarded with prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500, respectively, and all eligible entries will receive a Starbucks gift card.

SCARING UP SUPPORT: Throughout this challenging year, San Jose artist collective Local Color has done a fantastic job of keeping our creative community engaged, painting murals over boarded-up storefront windows following the George Floyd protests and, with its “Hella Gardens” project, adding more art to empty storefront windows downtown.
Local Color’s latest program is 31 Skulls, a Halloween-themed fundraiser Saturday featuring ceramic skulls painted by 31 local artists — including Local Color co-founder Erin Salazar — that are available to win. The artists who created the pieces will be part of the YouTube event and will announce the random winner of their skull. (OK, that sounds creepier than I thought.) Meanwhile, Mix 106.5 FM and Bay FM (94.5) are teaming up on a “Trunk or Treat” drive to collect donations for Humane Society Silicon Valley’s Pet Pantry program on Friday. People can drop off unopened packages of dog and cat food — wet or dry — from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Humane Society’s location at 901 Ames Ave. in Milpitas.

DR. FAUCI SPEAKS: Infectious disease superstar Dr. Anthony Fauci will be the big guest at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s 24th annual forum, a virtual event taking place Friday morning. Fauci will talk to the Leadership Group’s new CEO, Ahmad Thomas, about where we are on COVID-19 and how Silicon Valley can play a part in the implementation of a vaccine.
Following that, Fauci will be part of a panel discussion with Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody and COVID-19 Testing Officer Dr. Marty Fenstersheib for a discussion about the pandemic on a more local level. The event also will include the presentation of the Spirit of Silicon Valley Award to Lisa Su, president and CEO of AMD, who will take part in a “fireside chat” with Synopsys co-founder Aart de Geus.
