SOUTHPORT, Ind. – Fallen Southport Lt. Aaron Allan may be gone, but he’s not forgotten as the city’s football team chose to honor him during their game Friday night.

The Southport Cardinals decided to wear stickers on their helmets to remember Allan..

“That's what we came up with and we thought it's a great way to honor him and play this year for him,” said coach Brian Dugger. “He was one of the nicest guys you 'll ever meet, smile on his face all the time. Hard to believe tragedy could happen in our community.”

Allan was killed on July 27 after he was shot multiple times while trying to help a man who had just been in a car accident. He later died at the hospital.

Jason Brown, the man accused of shooting Allan, was officially charged with murder and possession of marijuana on Aug.1.

“It's great for the community and school to honor him and the duty he did for Southport,” said Tim Cheatham.

Duggar said the thin blue line stickers will stay on the team’s helmets throughout the season.

“Southport is strong,” he said. “The community is together and behind the police department and officer Allan's family. We just want them to know we're thinking about them and coming together as a community.”
