Piraeus side Olympiacos could not have asked for a better start in this year’s Champions League competition and defeated Spanish champions Atletico Madrid 3-2 at the Karaiskakis stadium. The goals were scored by Masuaku (13’), Afellay (31’) and Mitroglou (73’) for the “reds”, while Mandžukić (38’) and Griezmann (86’) scored for the “rojiblancos”.

Despite being considered the Group A underdog, Olympiacos coach Michel expertly countered Diego Simeone’s plans and quickly managed to take reign of the match early on in the game. After scoring two quick goals in the first half, Olympiacos managed to restrict Atletico in the first half.

Atletico took reign of the match early on in the second half, in an effort to equalize the score, however Olympiacos goalkeeper Roberto was on top performance and blocked critical shots. Kostas Mitroglou made things even worse for Atletico with an impressive goal, dampening the Spanish side’s hopes for the game.

In the other match in the group Juventus defeated Swedish champions Malmö FF 2-0. Olympiacos’ next European match is on the 1st of October against Malmö in Sweden.
