We had to fly in one day early in order to make it in time to board the ship, so we decided to explore Ft. Lauderdale as soon as we got in. It was a relaxing evening walking along the boardwalk and eating at Coconuts, a local restaurant on the water, recommended by a local.
The next morning, we took the 10 o'clock shuttle to the port and the excitement kicked in. It was very busy, but we were greeted right away and our luggage was tagged and stacked in the luggage bins upon our arrival. We walked right through the check-in without waiting (deck 11). The lower decks had long lines. We were surrounded by friendly people, so waiting to embark was pleasant.
Boarding went smoothly, the staff was extremely friendly upon boarding and our room was ready right after we had lunch in Central Park.
Beautiful room with a huge balcony. Plenty of storage with a beautiful view! It was a great atmosphere having the balcony sliding door open to listen to the piano and violin players in the evenings. No bugs were a plus too. I was nervous at first, but we slept with the door open an inch so we could hear the nighttime noises (cricket soundtrack) and didn't have any bug problems. :)
We had a great evening along the beach before returning to our hotel for the night.
My husband and I were disappointed by how dirty the port was. Poverty and construction all around wasn't what we had anticipated. However, we took a friend's recommendation and took a taxi to the public beach near Atlantis. It was a much more pleasant experience being on the touristy side of the island. As soon as we crossed the bridge, the surroundings were much nicer. I'm glad we left the port because we were honestly about to turn around and go back onto the ship.
