Northwoods League: Huskies rock Rox

The Duluth Huskies used a three-run third inning to launch themselves past the St. Cloud Rox 7-2 in Northwoods League play Friday before a crowd of 1,183 at Wade Stadium.

The Duluth Huskies used a three-run third inning to launch themselves past the St. Cloud Rox 7-2 in Northwoods League play Friday before a crowd of 1,183 at Wade Stadium.

The Huskies (6-4) held a 2-1 advantage over the Rox (5-5) going into the bottom of the third when shortstop Nicholas Sogard led off the inning with a triple. He came home on the next at bat via an error. Catcher Chris Gilbody later scored on a putout and center fielder Julian Escobedo's two-out RBI single made it 5-1 Huskies.

Gilbody finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Designated hitter John Lagattuta was also 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Hunter Bigge earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. He gave up two runs off six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings.

The Huskies remain at Wade this weekend, opening a two-game series at 6:35 p.m. today against North Division first-half champion Bismarck.

• Four Huskies were named to the North Division team for the 2018 Northwoods League All-Star game on July 24 in Kalamazoo, Mich. Infielders Gilbody, Sogard and Augie Isaacson will be joined by pitcher Troy Newell.
