Raise a puppy, change a life

Anacortes-based Summit Assistance Dogs is looking for foster families across Western Washington to take in puppies being trained to help people who need assistance.

SEATTLE — Puppies are always cute and cuddly, but these dogs will grow to have important jobs to do.

Summit Assistance Dogs, based in Anacortes, is searching for volunteers to open their homes to these pups and help raise them to become service dogs. Even though it isn't easy to let them go, puppy raisers have said that it is a rewarding experience knowing they helped train a dog into an animal that will help someone live a better life.

Opportunities are available to those who have the time available to be a long-term foster home for a pup or those looking for a more short-term option, providing respite care for puppy raisers and caring for dogs while they are in between different programs and stages in their training. Those interested can request an application form by emailing Summit Assistance Dogs at info@summitdogs.org.

Philanthropic giving officer Alex Stone and professional dog trainer Lindy Langum are here with foster pup parents and their puppies-in-training to explain more about the program and how you can get involved.
