Dwayne Johnson is setting sail on a new film based on a classic theme park ride.
The movie star has signed on to star in a film based on the Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who co-wrote Will Smith’s heist flick “Focus,” have been tapped to write the screenplay.
The publication reports that Disney is aiming for a retro vibe with the project, reminiscent of the 1951 adventure film “The African Queen.”
In fact, the Humphrey Bogart-Katharine Hepburn movie was one of the inspirations for the Jungle Cruise ride, which has been a Disneyland fixture since the theme park opened in 1955.
Johnson expressed his enthusiasm for the project Wednesday on Twitter.
“Goal is to make this insanely cool and fun for fans ’round the globe,” the “San Andreas” star wrote.
He also tipped his hat to another Disney franchise based on a classic Disneyland attraction.
“My bud (Johnny) Depp and PIRATES set the high standard. Now the fun part starts.. we put in the work.”
“Jungle Cruise” is Disney’s latest project based on a Disneyland theme park ride in recent years.
Besides Depp’s hit “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, Eddie Murphy starred in 2003’s “The Haunted Mansion” and George Clooney headlined this summer’s box office disappointment “Tomorrowland.”
