Someone may have intentionally set that devastating fire in downtown Woodstock.

The fire chief told the Valley News the Monday blaze is being investigated as suspicious.

A significant portion of the Central Street building was destroyed, including a pizza place and two apartments. An excavator was brought in Tuesday to begin tearing down the structure.

The owners are working with their insurance company, but at this time, the future remains uncertain. Firefighters did manage to save the stone section of the historic building.

"The stone section of this building came through remarkably unscathed. We are in remediation right now. Businesses, at least the Collective, is thinking they may be able to open in days and they may be able to do so," said Nat Williams, the property manager.

The Vermont Standard headquarters were also damaged by the fire. The newspaper is using the Norman Williams Public Library on the green as a temporary workspace to get out this week's edition.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Vermont's arson tip line at 1-800-32-ARSON.
