Houston-Area Top Weekend Concerts: John Doe, Prophets and Outlaws, and Horszowski Trio

The acts include a punk legend, a fine classical trio, country guys from Dallas, and Big Sandy and his boys,

Ready for the weekend? The weather is going to be a mix of sun and clouds, and Sunday will bring some blustery wind, but the music is going to hot and lively and engaging. As usual, the performers will bring their A games, and your only job is fitting in as many gigs as you want to.

First, a music legend. John Doe, he of seminal punk band X. He's recorded 10 solo albums and written some great songs, and he's touring on hs latest release, The Westerner. He's on at 7 p.m. on Friday at McGonigel's Mucky Duck, and tickets are a bargain at $25 ($27 at the door).

There are two shows on Saturday, and both promise to raise the roof. First, out at Dosey Do in The Woodlands, Prophets & Outlaws bring their sound to the Big Barn's stage. Their out of Dallas, and their country sounds have garnered them fans around the nation. They are smooth and traditional, and they put on a fine show. Here's a look:

Also on Saturday, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys hit town, and if The Woodlands is a bridge too far, check out this gig at The Continental Club. Big Sandy has been around a long time, and his guitar and voice are things to behold. The band is scheduled for 9 p.m., and tickets will cost you all of $15.

Finally for this week, a Tuesday engagement, and it's an enthralling one. Da Camera brings the Horszowski Trio to The Menil Collection, and this classical concert is a must-see. Violin, cello, and piano excellence, this trio is regarded highly, and if you are a fan of Fauré and Schubert, get your tickets today. This concert starts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21.
