WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —  Two vehicles hit and killed a pedestrian on U.S. 52 in Winston-Salem Wednesday night.

Winston-Salem police say the incident occurred between 10 and 11 p.m. on U.S. 52 at Bethania-Rural Hall Road when the pedestrian was struck while walking in the northbound travel lanes. The first vehicle, driven by 53-year-old Bonnie Lee Bridges, struck the pedestrian. The second vehicle, a tractor-trailer driven by 50-year-old Paul Anthony Michael, also collided with the pedestrian. Police say Bridges did not see the pedestrian and Michael was unable to avoid the victim.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and positive identification will be released pending an autopsy and notification of next of kin.

The Winston-Salem Police Department highlighted alternate routes in a release Thursday morning:

US 52 northbound is closed at exit #116 while the Winston-Salem Police Department investigates a vehicle accident.

Motorists are asked to exit at exit #116, follow University Parkway northbound, and re-enter US 52 at the Highway 65/Bethanina-Rural Hall Road ramp.

The on-ramps to US 52 northbound from Hanes Mill Road and NC 66 are also closed.

It is expected that it will be several hours before US 52 is reopened.

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

The investigation is ongoing.
