Extolling the virtues of the slip dress is superfluous. We know she’s a classic. Slinky spaghetti strapped numbers are the equivalent of a cool glass of water on the steamy summer’s eve that is the wedding scene. While some get swept up in the fashion trend cycle, slip wearers are always the most effortless on the dance floor. Which is why Victoria Beckham, the mother-of-the-groom at the Beckham-Peltz Palm Beach nuptials, chose a liquid-metallic version to stand out for all the right reasons at her son’s celebrity-packed celebrations.

As well as enlisting six members of her London atelier team to create her couture-level Studio 54-inspired slip, Beckham outfitted a handful of other guests in her signature minimalist-with-a-twist dresses. Romeo’s plus one, Mia Regan, chose a sky-blue number with which to wow the roving photographers, and then dressed it down with Birkenstock clogs (an influencer after our own hearts) once the party was over. Eva Longoria did VB’s sophisticated version of the LBD, while Zana Rassi’s own inky black slip was all business-at-the-front, party-at-the-back, thanks to an eye-wateringly low cut-out.

VB’s stylish cohort showed that the beauty of the slip is that it needs little in the way of adornment. Discreet jewellery and a timeless heeled sandal – or flat! – give off an air of insouciance, as if you’ve just thrown it on à la Kate Moss in the ’90s. Think Diana, Princess of Wales in exquisite black lace John Galliano at the Met Gala, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s bias-cut Narciso Rodriguez wedding gown, or Sienna Miller in peach Galvan during a particularly memorable San Sebastian Film Festival. Less is always more.
A word on what goes on underneath. You should never see even the hint of a knicker. Consult Skims if you want something sculpting and smoothing, or go teeny tiny so absolutely nothing is visible. Your smalls should give the shoulders back, head up confidence that a slip requires of its wearer.
