Theatre Tulsa has announced that the final "Broadway Series" production of its 95th season will be "The Producers."
Based on
Mel Brooks' classic film, this hysterically funny musical adaptation follows two theatrical producers who create a scheme to make more money with a flop than a hit. The result is a Broadway musical production of "Springtime for Hitler," which is so over-the-top in bad taste that audiences assume it's a satirical comedy and turn it into a blockbuster hit.
The musical version of "The Producers" was adapted by
Mel Brooks himself, along with
Thomas Meehan, with lyrics written by Brooks, plus music composed by Brooks and arranged by
Glen Kelly and
Doug Besterman.
The original Broadway production opened in 2001, starring
Nathan Lane and
Matthew Broderick. It ran for more than 2,500 performances and won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards. It spawned a successful London production, national tours in the US and UK, many additional productions worldwide and a 2005 film version.
