Florida men stole $67K worth of rent checks from Fayetteville apartments

Two men have been charged after police said they stole more than $60,000 worth of checks and money orders throughout Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Two men have been charged after police said they stole more than $60,000 worth of checks and money orders throughout Fayetteville.

Fayetteville police said Jorge Perez-Montalvo, 28, and Duanis Rodriguez-Rodriguez, 32, broke into rent payment drop boxes at apartment complexes in March, changed the names on the checks and deposited them.

Authorities said the men stole 128 checks and money orders, totaling more than $67,000.

Both men were charged with 17 counts of breaking and entering, 128 counts of larceny, obtaining property by false pretenses and conspiracy.

Perez-Montalvo, of the 800 block of W. 74th Street in Hialeah, Fla., was arrested in Georgia and was being held under $1,445,000 secured bond.

Rodriguez-Rodriguez, of the 600 block of 10th Avenue in Miami, Fla. was not in custody Monday and authorities are urging him to surrender to police.
