As northern Michigan gets hit hard with frigid temperatures in January, we start to find ourselves stuck inside for longer periods of time. I can only wonder what February will bring ... ice caves, perhaps?

It is what we do inside that will keep us sane or wreak havoc on us mentally.

Perhaps instead of sitting on the sofa watching television, one could be working out while watching that same show.

There are many ways that you can do this without jumping around the room wearing a headband and leotard. Typically when people think about working out at home, they think of having a treadmill or elliptical machine. These units are great and can really give you a customized workout for what you are looking for. But they tend to be larger units that can take up a lot of room and come with a higher price tag.

If you are a cyclist, then you have probably heard of setting up a bike trainer, putting your own bike on it and being able to ride inside. This will be one of the least expensive options, while still giving you a great workout. If you're older, or not really an athlete, then a stationary recumbent bike is something to consider. These units are still a great way to get a low-impact workout. They have a comfortable seat and are very easy to get on and off.

Perhaps you already have a unit but it is just not working right. No need to let it sit and collect dust. McLain Cycle puts certified exercise equipment mechanics on the road year-round to fix almost every brand out there. Did you buy your unit from a department store in northern Michigan? McLain’s is more than likely the ones that will handle all your warranty work and repairs. They also are in charge of routine maintenance at many physical therapy centers, hotels and resorts.

If you decided that your New Year's resolution would be to stay in shape, then having a piece of equipment in your home will be a lot easier. It can be hard to stay on track when having to go to the gym when the roads are bad. If you just hate the cold and need to stay sane, then working out can also help when the gray skies have you feeling depressed. Whatever works best for you while dealing with cold temperatures and being stuck inside can make a difference. My suggestion is to look into something that you can work out at home that will challenge you — but doesn't challenge you so much that you give up on it in a month. If you already have a piece of equipment, but it needs some TLC then there is no time like the present to get that fixed.
